[Sunbeam Talbot Email List] early Alpines with/without armrests.....?????...

Greetings everyone.
I believe All the Alpines came with a pull cord attached to the door to
allow for pulling the door closed when the armrest was removed, the armrest
covered this cord up when installed, with the idea that just by undoing the
chrome bolt the armrest was quickly removable (for competition purposes) and
after the race the armrest's could be put back on for the ride home.
This weekend warrior concept was carried through out the Alpines. the
idea was that these cars could be raced on the weekends and prepping them for
competition included removing the armrests, the Top, (hood) the passenger
seat, the blanking plates under the louvers in the Bonnet to aid in engine
cooling, and even the windshield could be quickly removed. Then after the
fun all the parts could be quickly reattached and the Alpine could return to
it's daily routine of transportation, Walter Mitty style.
So to be proper, include the armrests in the restoration, and if you find
yourself whacking your elbow on them during the heat of some sporting
driving, just pop them off as was originally intended.
Cheers

I agree with Mal. I have them in my car and they are not in the way, look
quite nice and are original...so, why not use them. You are lucky
someone along the way didn't lose them, too. All the best, Dan Gooding, WV, USA

Hi Ray,don't hesitate to fit the arm rest they are great, and they work,as
suggested they are a means of closing the door, when the soft top is up,,good
luck Mal Clark.

Well, since you have not done your interior yet <<...i'm having my
interior redone completely...>>, why not just install them and see how they grab
you? Then decide whether to include them in the redo or not.

hello martin,
thanks for the comments............
I have no intention of throwing them away!!! I was just wondering -
comfort wise - if I it would be more comfortable to leave them off..... They
haven't been installed on my car since I bought it, and I have no way of
knowing what the driving experience is like with them installed - that is why I
asked.
tks, ray

hi ray & all,
if the car came to you with parts missing, i would understand you having
to make do with what you have. but i would never dream of deliberately
leaving bits off. i always use the armrests to pull the doors shut,i am quite
large,(17st) and they dont get in my way whilst driving.when all is said and
done it's your car so its your choice but i would urge you not to throw
them away.keep them with the car for sometime in the future. alpine parts are
like goldust and oneday someone might say oh no the armrests are missing.
best wishes, martin spurrell.

hello all,
in my boxes of bits and pieces i've come across some original armrests for
my '54 Alpine..........
since i'm having my interior redone completely, i need to decide what to
do with the armrests........
since i've had the car they have NOT been installed - just been sitting in
boxes.
i've seen restored Alpines both with, and without, the armrests.........
To me they look a bit cumbersome when installed - but i have no way of
knowing what they are like when installed........
so - all of you who have them - are they in the way/cumbersome? should i
have them reinstalled (NO, my car is not an accurate restoration - for
those of you who do not remember, i am one of the people who has a Toyota 22R
engine and 5-speed in my car)..........
any thoughts?
tks, ray
