For your information Ray,there is a captive nut for the arm rests on the metal door panel to attached the arm rest, at the bottom, either 3/16 or 5/16 bsf bolt.( mine was chrome) But you do need a top piece that the arm rest clips over ,there is a piece of wood covered in vinyl, and has a hoop on it,which acted as a door pull, when you didn't have arm rests, when this piece is attached to the covered door panel the arm rest slots over the top of the covered hoop piece, and holds the top of the arm rest, then the described bolt goes in the bottom, holding the arm rest on. I think there is a picture of this in the Workshop manual.? You will have to make this top holding piece out of wood to be able to fit the arm rests. Mal Clark.

Well, since you have not done your interior yet <<...i'm having my interior redone completely...>>, why not just install them and see how they grab you? Then decide whether to include them in the redo or not.

hello martin,
thanks for the comments............
I have no intention of throwing them away!!! I was just wondering - comfort wise - if I it would be more comfortable to leave them off..... They haven't been installed on my car since I bought it, and I have no way of knowing what the driving experience is like with them installed - that is why I asked.
tks, ray

hi ray & all,
if the car came to you with parts missing, i would understand you having to make do with what you have. but i would never dream of deliberately leaving bits off. i always use the armrests to pull the doors shut,i am quite large,(17st) and they dont get in my way whilst driving.when all is said and done it's your car so its your choice but i would urge you not to throw them away.keep them with the car for sometime in the future. alpine parts are like goldust and oneday someone might say oh no the armrests are missing.
best wishes, martin spurrell.

hello all,
in my boxes of bits and pieces i've come across some original armrests for my '54 Alpine..........
since i'm having my interior redone completely, i need to decide what to do with the armrests........
since i've had the car they have NOT been installed - just been sitting in boxes.
i've seen restored Alpines both with, and without, the armrests.........
To me they look a bit cumbersome when installed - but i have no way of knowing what they are like when installed........
so - all of you who have them - are they in the way/cumbersome? should i have them reinstalled (NO, my car is not an accurate restoration - for those of you who do not remember, i am one of the people who has a Toyota 22R engine and 5-speed in my car)..........
any thoughts?
tks, ray
