[Sunbeam Talbot Email List] Sunbeam Talbot 90 Gearbox Conversions.

There are some further points to remember on gearbox conversions.

With a non overdrive box because you have turned the box thro' 90 degrees the rear crossmember will need cutting, realigning and rewelding up. Not too bad so long as you have access to a welder! Also as the speedo drive comes up thro the floor, there is the possibility that an angle drive might overcome the problem.

Personally if you are going to convert to floorchange, I feel it is always best to go for an overdrive at the same time. However this does entail getting hold of an overdrive gearbox, from either another Sunbeam Talbot ( easiest and best ) or another Rootes model, but with the latter, these involve more conversion to get the splines to mate to the Sunbeam clutch. So you either need to change the clutch as well, or undertake major surgery to the front gearbox shaft too.

Unfortunately you cannot just bolt an overdrive onto a non-overdrive gearbox because you need the longer mainshaft to connect thro' to drive the overdrive. Overdrive mainshafts themselves are like rocking horse manure, to find !

This is where Sunbeam Talbot Spares come in because they market a conversion using the Hillman Hunter/ Humber Sceptre 1967 to 1976? ( Arrow Shape model ) gearbox, which gives you a later type Overdrive and a synchromesh first gear. You need to find such a donor gearbox first however, and I am told Jensen Healey boys are after these gearboxes too !

Finally if you go for an overdrive box, the rear gearbox cross member locates further back so you need to drill two new holes in the chassis, thats the easy bit ! You cannot use the original rear crossmember, it is too wide, so thats why if you source a genuine ST overdrive gearbox you get all the relevant bits with it, - hopefully !!

I have also found the Humber Hawk crossmembers too wide . Because the G/B and O/D sit further back in the chassis, the cruciform chassis members are narrowing sharply and the crossmember cannot fit in the narrow gap. You might be able to do more cutting and shutting, but that is why the genuine ST overdrive crossmember saves all the bother.

After all that you still need to cut about 4 inches off the transmission tunnel and refabricate the floor to clear the higher upright position of the gearbox.

If you need any further clarification speak to Martin Spurrell or myself, Martin Andrews, ( Streamstyle Classics ). Email, talpine at btinternet.com

All the best !

  hi all,
if you revolve the rear casing using an adaptor plate as described you don't have a problem with the speedo cable. having said this,i have only done this modification on a gearbox fitted with overdrive so if it can't be done on none overdrive boxes i stand corrected but there usualy is a way, maybe by using the rear casing of the box the lid came off?
                   best wishes, martin spurrell.

  Hi Jeff,

I agree with Martin as this is the route I took over 40 years ago using the top shifting mechanism from a Hillman Husky or Commer Cob, both late 50's cars. It might be hard to find one now but I am sure there are are some lying around somewhere. One disadvantage is that the speedo cable has to come into the passenger compartment to reach the speedo head, something I have lived with for a long time.

  Good luck!
  Bob

    hi jeff,
i have several of these floor change conversions in my collection of bits and bobs but they are weak and flimsy. there is a better way. if you look at you're existing gearbox you will find that it lies on it's side with it's lid facing the right hand side of the car. if you remove the gearbox, undo the bell housing bolts, twist the gearbox till the lid is at the top, the bolt holes all lign up. if you obtain a gearbox lid with a floor change from another rootes car, swap the lids over and you have a strong reliable conversion. you haven't said if your car has overdrive or not, but in either case you will probably need a rear gearbox adaptor plate to spin the rear casing round so the mounting lines up with the chassis. a good engineering shop can make such a plate. sounds like hard work but i have done it and highly recommend the finished job.
