[Sunbeam Talbot Email List] Summer driving

Gents

Maybe I'm being stupid, but I would not expect that floor pan to get warm enough to heat up the car. The air flow as the vehicle is driving along should keep the floor cool.

I can see reasons for the firewall getting warm - the heat from the engine will be pushed straight onto it - but not the floor.

I suspect that putting product under the carpet may make an improvement in terms of acoustic insulation, but not in terms of thermal insulation.

You may find that the same insulation is used for both purposes - to avoid manufacturers using two products - but I think you can avoid the cost of lining the floor (then finding the carpets don't fit properly) and just insulate the firewall.

Glad you gentlemen had this chat as I have the same issue. I lifted the carpet...there's nothing there but sheet metal!

What is the best product to use for an such insulation project anyway?

Thanks Martin. It does merit a peek-see, although I refurbished the heater and double checked the controls at the time.
Yes, I do believe I have an insulation project on the to-do list.

hi wes,
the heater unit controlls have stiff piano wire between the controll knobs and the flaps in the heater box, also the water valve, this wire commonly collapses due to old age. if so you may have the controll knob in the off position but the valve still open, allowing hot water into the heater right when you don't need it. its worth checking. failing that i go along with john fengs suggestion re.insulation.
                             best wishes martin spurrell.
