I too echo everyone else's well wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

What kind of bike was he riding?

In my youth I also tried to learn to ride a bike (after a few trips as 
the rear passenger).  I quickly gave that up when an oak tree jumped out 
in front of me on my maiden voyage.
