This is similar to what happened to a friend of ours a few months ago.
Riding quietly through the 'burbs when a  minivan in front of him turned off
down a side street, and a car (whose driver assumed that there was nothing
behind the minivan) pulled out in front of him.  Our friend (who had been
riding without major drama for 40+ years ) ended up with broken bones and
requiring skin grafts and has only recently been able to drive again.
Lesson being that no matter how careful you are sometimes the odds catch up
with you.  

 

In 1983 I wanted to buy a 'cycle - my wife said she wasn't ready to bury me
yet, and so we ended up buying our Series 3 Alpine instead.

He loves (d) his motorcycle but I think this was the last straw.  He was
driving through a small town with cars parked along the side of the street
and a car pulled out from a driveway between these cars without looking.
Anyway, he is out of surgery and leg all bandaged up.  He is a little
heavier due to the pins and plates but the Dr says he is good.  He was in
good spirits when I left tonight but that may have been the drugs.  I
believe you will hear from  him in the next 24 hours when he gets his cell
phone back
