John, The exhaust routing shown in your photo is incorrect for the Alpine.The saloon and convertible were routed that way.The Alpine silencer was routed on the outside of the chassis and 
the tail pipe curved upwards over the frame and out the back.       Pete

I have the manual, and see the hanging brackets and upward bend on page 150, but mine was not set up that way at all.  Mine bent downwards to go under the rear axle....

 John ... that is the way it should be on the standard Alpine exhaust. After passing through the chassis, the pipe takes a sharp turn upwards and passes over the rear axle.   Do you have the "Blue Book" - the Sunbeam Talbot Parts Supply which lists all parts often with drawings for the Alpine Mk I, The Mk III saloon and the "90" Mk II and IIA . It is available from Peter Shimmel at:  http://www.mercianmanuals.co.uk/   and is one of the essential tools to guide you through a restoration..

The pipes went through holes in the frame to allow the muffler to be located higher off the ground. 

I take it that this was NOT standard...
